The Planning Committee for the Colfax-Red Cedar Preserve and Recreation Area is excited to offer a Science Exploration Day on Saturday May 18, 2024.
- 3 lessons will run concurrently at 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM.
- Lessons will be hands-on in nature and last approximately 50 minutes
- Lessons will be geared towards students in grades 2-6 but learners of ALL Ages are welcome to attend! Parents are asked to accompany young children.
- Lunch will be provided at 12 Noon! (Thank you to local Merchants!) Lunch includes grilled wieners, chips, fruit and drinks.

Rocks and Minerals: Learn about common rocks and minerals of Wisconsin. How do Agates form? How did they get to the Colfax-Red Cedar Preserve? Retired Science Instructor Paul Verdon will lead this lesson.
Amphibians and Reptiles: Come and explore the wetland habitats found at the Preserve and discover what species of amphibians and reptiles call this area home. Learn about the role wetlands play in the breeding cycle of frogs as well as their winter survival. Learn to identify some common frogs by their calls. Retired Science Instructor Mark Mosey will lead this lesson.
Grassland Bugs and Critters: Learn about the ecology of a grassland. What kinds of creatures live here? What unique adaptations to they have? UW-Stout Biology Professor Keith Gilland will lead this lesson.
